CHARACTER
NAME: Keith Kogane
CANON: Voltron: Legendary Defender
CANON POINT: post-s7 (s8? I don't know her)
AGE: 21
BACKGROUND: Wikipedia

PERSONALITY:

Keith is a passionate, tumultuous individual who is often governed by his emotions, but evolves into a mature and level-headed leader over the course of his life. He doesn’t start out in the best of places; he lives alone in the desert in the beginning of the series, having just been expelled from military school for disciplinary issues. Indeed, he struggles with anger and a tendency to lash out when he is stressed or upset, and prefers to isolate himself and avoid attachments to protect himself from rejection. Despite this, he shows himself to be intuitive and thoughtful, and absolutely devoted to his goals and to what he thinks is right.

Joining team Voltron helps Keith form connections with others and find purpose, but he still struggles with deep-seated emotional trauma from being abandoned as a child. He is often controlled by his emotions, especially anger; his quick temper has always been a source of conflict in his life, even as a kid. At the Garrison Keith often got into fights with other students and had trouble respecting authority--even referred to as a ‘discipline case’ by one of his teachers--and his behavior problems led to his expulsion from the Garrison entirely. Even as a young man, Keith still has problems with lashing out at others-- When Pidge tries to break away from the team to find her family, Keith immediately admonishes her for abandoning team Voltron for what he deems are selfish goals. Keith is intensely, fully devoted to his pursuits, including the liberation of the universe from the Galra, and he has trouble empathizing with her in the moment because of that single-minded thought process.

This determination and stubbornness sometimes causes him to make reckless decisions, particularly in battle; he refuses to back down from a fight, even if he or others around him are in danger. This shows when he decides to attack Zarkon on his own, even though he is fully aware that he is outmatched, and when he is leading Voltron and insists that the team pursue Lotor even into clearly dangerous terrain. He saw both instances as opportunities to take down their opponents for good and didn’t realize the repercussions of such rash decisions. After he is stranded in space with his mother and spends two years growing independently from everyone else, he evolves as a person and matures as a leader, so these instances are much fewer and farther between than before.

Keith has shown himself to be protective and self-sacrificing-- particularly when he steers his ship at a barrier during the fight at Naxzela, fully intending to ram into it to save Voltron. When he believes he is being used by Zarkon to track the team, he elects to leave them altogether to keep them out of harm’s way. His protectiveness is especially shown in his devotion to Shiro in particular, who is a huge positive force in his life, and Keith will stop at nothing to save and protect him. He is the only one of the Paladins to continue to pursue Shiro after his disappearance, and does not stop until he is found. During the Trials of Marmora, Keith fights relentlessly to discover the secrets of his past, but surrenders the moment Shiro is threatened. He tries to sabotage an entire Blade of Marmora mission to disrupt the Kral Zera because Shiro is in harm’s way. After Shiro is revealed to be a clone created to do Haggar’s bidding, Keith still fights to bring him back and even lets himself fall to certain death with him rather than let him go to save his own life.

As mentioned before,Keith was abandoned by his mother as a child, and he also lost his father at an early age. As a result he is very guarded and doesn’t let people get close to him very easily. He can have difficulty connecting with people and understanding social cues, and often times he will make himself unapproachable and intimidating to keep others at bay in an attempt to avoid rejection. He is not altogether cold, but it does take him time to warm up to people and often approaches new faces with an undercurrent of distrust. Now that his mother is back in his life and Keith knows that she left in order to protect him, some of Keith’s turmoil has leveled out and so have his emotional outbursts. Keith still has moments where his anger flares up under stress, as is shown when the Paladins are stranded in open space and begin to lose hope; Keith lashes out and says incredibly hurtful things, and even though he is contrite later, it still shows that his anger issues are present and haven’t gone away entirely.

Still, he takes over as the Black Lion of Voltron and proves himself a strong, resourceful leader who cares deeply about his team. He is extremely dedicated not only to those closest to him, but to his own sense of justice and honor. This can be seen in the way he treats his enemies; when he finds a Galra soldier trapped inside of the Weblum, he elects to save them rather than leave them inside. That Galra turns out to be Axca, who Keith later saves again after she helps him and the team escape Ezor and Zethrid’s ship. Instead of turning on her because of her former loyalties, he helps her out of his own sense of what’s right and wrong. He has a strong moral code that differentiates him from his adversaries, particularly Lotor.

Overall, Keith is dedicated to Voltron’s mission of liberating the universe from the Galra, and is driven by his protective instincts and a desire for freedom. Ultimately, Keith wants to protect what he cares about-- Shiro, his found family within team Voltron, and the Earth where he grew up and considers his home.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Keith is a highly skilled fighter, particularly in martial arts and knife fighting. He focuses mostly on agility and can take down opponents much larger than him with ease. He is also a naturally talented pilot. His knife, called the Blade of Marmora, has the ability to expand in size when he wills it to.

INVENTORY: Keith will arrive with: his Blade of Marmora sword, a communicator, his dog Kosmo (who has the ability to teleport himself and Keith around; let me know if you need me to nerf this), a utility knife, his red Garrison uniform (he'll be wearing his Voltron Paladin armor) and his Blade of Marmora armor

MOONBLESSING: Iris
